 Hot Cell Wall Embedment Liners

A hot cell wall embedment liner is usually a massive steel weldment embedded in the cell wall, and constitutes the wall cavity that the shielding window housing is inserted into. The embedment liners are in place when the wall concrete is poured, and is therefore one of the critical items required during the initial building construction.

The steel embedment liner weldment is designed to provide radiation shielding that matches or slightly exceeds the attenuation factor of its adjacent concrete wall, and is a key part of the window viewing system. When the window housing is inserted into the embedment liner, the reverse matching vaulted sides of the liner and window housing overlap to provide absolute radiation attenuation at the juncture areas.

Premier Technology's unique embedment liner design provides radiation shielding and the option for alpha shield removal for maintenance, if required. All the embedment liner designs incorporate a remotely removable, sealed, framed radiation shielding glass plate known as the alpha shield. This sealed, cerium stabilized, non-browning glass plate and frame forms the contamination barrier between the hot cell atmosphere and the working corridor atmosphere. It also provides a physical shield for the window housing hot side cover plate. This design concept allows the window housing to be withdrawn for maintenance without the hot cell atmosphere contaminating the wall cavity or corridor area. When the window housing is in position, the window cavity is sealed at the cold side of the window housing/liner interface, and the alpha shield and frame may be remotely removed if maintenance/cleaning is required.
