Shielding Windows & Glass — Tutorial   <PRIOR>  <NEXT>   Back to Topic List

The Most Critical Design Criteria for Radiation Shielding Windows

Shielding

  • Wall Type (e.g. concrete, steel, lead)
  • Wall Density (in g/cc or lbs./ft.3)
  • Thickness (in inches or mm)

                         And

  • Isotope Source (e.g. Co60)
  • Maximum Dose Rate (R/h) and Energy Level (MeV)
  • Distribution (point or plane)
  • Geometry/Position Of Source
  • Duration (Load/Time Factor)
  • Cold Side Dose Permitted (e.g. 0.25 m R/h)
  • Lifetime Dose (10xR), Design Life (yrs)

Viewing

  • Window Size; Clear view size and largest plate size
  • Cell Layout With Respect To Window Location
  • Objects To Be Viewed With Regards To Their Distance
    & Location From Window Centerline
  • Viewing Angles; Normal and Extreme
